The kids at St. Dymphna’s Special School have started
running and hugging us each morning when we arrive. It is the perfect way to
start the day.
The kids are so dirty and dusty. Sadiki sneezed and got snot
all over his cheek. It actually cleaned his face a bit. Ha! We bought the kids
baby wipes and baby oil to wash up a bit before class, as well as to keep their
head moisturized. They love the wipes, it seems almost therapeutic for them to
use one. We decided wipes would be better than the hand sanitizer we give them
after using the washroom, as they would always wipe the sanitizer on their face
and head.

Turns out level 1 actually has a teacher! Katie and I
survived an entire week alone, we were proud.
Katie stayed to work with her, and I went to the level 2 class. I worked with the kids to write out letters. Carol is so
smart, but she has difficulty with fine motor skills. She would write out
letters, but they had to be perfect before moving to the next one. Julius had a
huge smile on his face when I marked his work with a big checkmark, and said
“kazi mzuri!!” (good job!). Enoki is 15, and so sweet. However, he doesn’t know
his own strength. I would be looking at someone else’s work, and he wanted me
to see his coloring, so he would “tap” me on the shoulder, however it was more
like a backhand or a slap.

We bought notebooks, pencils, and other supplies.
For the notebooks we are individualizing them based on ability and skill. Some
are writing out letters and numbers, while some focus on building fine motor
skills. In the afternoon we would take each student individually and work with
them in their notebook. It worked out very well, I was happy.
