St. Dymphna's Special School.

So long Levolosi Hospital, hello St. Dymphna's Special School!

Our new placement is within walking distance from our house, bonus! However it is up a giant hill. Ah well, maybe it will help lessen the effects of all the carbs we eat here.

Katie (who also had been in a medical placement and requested a change) and I arrived at the cutest little school, and were introduced to Agnes, one of the teachers. We asked questions such as what was expected of us, what past volunteers did, and what the kids were like. Her English was so poor, we left more confused than we came. Great start.

We went outside and met the kids. There were 13 of them there today. We played soccer, and pushed them on the swings.

Class time started, and Katie and I went into our classroom. Turns out the teacher was sick, so the kids were just running wild. What have we gotten ourselves into? We spent the next 2 hours pulling Amani, a very high energy little guy, off the chair, off the table, off the desk, and off the window.
Amani. Unable to be still long enough for a picture to be taken!

We tried to get them to do puzzles, to color, to play with lego. Instead they threw things, hit eachother, and ran around.

This is going to be a very tough placement. We left exhausted.

I went to the internet cafe and emailed my family and friends who have experience with kids who have special needs, and asked for tips, or help of any kind!

It is very evident that special needs is not understood and therefore resources are extremely limited in Tanzania.  I wonder what the next couple weeks will bring.
